I woke early this morning feeling groggy and sleepy. Instead of running to Starbucks for a fresh cup of coffee I threw on Netflix and started two of my favorite movies of all time, The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. Both films display an incredible display of men taking on tasks that were seen as impossible, suicidal even. Yet the people involved faced the uncertainty and conquered those demon’s. It is an ability that I feel we have lost sight of. In the wake of great tragedy in Japan, New Zealand and Haiti it is easy to lose sight of our ability as humans to overcome any obstacle. In today’s media we hear more and more about mans negative impact on the world. Global warming, war, pollution… Yet something is lost in the clutter of sensationalism and constant fear. Man has always overcome. Every road block creates a new opportunity to outdo ourselves, We advance technology, improve our understanding of science and constantly push the boundaries of what conventional wisdom once said was inconceivable. Along with the listed films I saw an ad late last night for a new TV series by the creators of Planet Earth and Life called Human Planet. Finally a series highlighting mans amazing ability to adapt and overcome. I hope it is a reminder to all who view it that the issues we face are but a small bump in the road and we will always find a way to adapt. It reminds me of one of my all time favorite movie clips from The Boondock Saints 2.
I must say that is one strong cup of morning coffee!
